Flowing across Ehime and Kochi Prefectures, the Niyodo River stretches for 124 kilometers with a basin of 1,560 square kilometers. On the Ehime side it is called the Omogo River, but once it reaches Kochi, it becomes the Niyodo—the name that travelers remember.

The river has been designated a Class A River by Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, marking it as especially important for both national land conservation and the economy.

It is also home to several dams, such as the impressive Odo Dam (the second largest in Shikoku), along with the Kae Dam and Ikadazu Dam, built for flood control and hydroelectric power generation. These facilities make the Niyodo one of the most utilized rivers in the region.

Here are three key features that make the Niyodo River stand out.

Image courtesy of the Niyodo Blue Tourism Association(画像提供：一般社団法人仁淀ブルー観光協議会)

The Cleanest Water in Japan

In 2019, after a survey of 162 Class A rivers nationwide, the Niyodo River was awarded No.1 in water quality for the second consecutive year.

It was also recognized as one of Japan’s 16 rivers with the very best water quality that year—the only one in all of Shikoku to receive this distinction.

A Paradise for Outdoor Leisure

The river’s middle to lower reaches are abundant in water, creating an ideal setting for outdoor fun. Visitors can enjoy camping, fishing, canoeing, and more.

In recent years, adventurous activities like rafting, stand-up paddleboarding (SUP), and shower climbing have also become popular, drawing nature lovers and thrill-seekers alike.

The Magical “Glowing Forest”

In the midstream area rises Mt. Yokokura, known as the “Glowing Forest.”

The forest owes its name to luminous mushrooms (Shiinotomoshitake) and the countless fireflies that inhabit the area. Depending on the season and time, you can witness a breathtaking collaboration between crystal-clear waters and flickering natural lights.

The Famous “Niyodo Blue”

Image courtesy of the Niyodo Blue Tourism Association(画像提供：一般社団法人仁淀ブルー観光協議会)

Above all, the Niyodo River is celebrated for its extraordinary color: a mystical, pure shade of blue known as “Niyodo Blue.”

The name was coined by nature photographer Nobuyuki Takahashi, who was captivated by its clarity and brilliance. Since then, travelers from all over the world have come seeking this remarkable sight.

The reason behind the vivid blue is not completely proven, but leading theories include:

・The water temperature is low, making it difficult for algae to grow.
・The hard surrounding rock produces little mud or sediment.
・The current is swift, preventing impurities from building up.
・Clearer water reflects more blue wavelengths of sunlight, making it appear more vivid.

While the “Niyodo Blue” can be seen along most of the river, certain locations are especially famous for it:

・Niko Falls (Niko-buchi)
・Nakatsu Gorge
・Yasui Gorge (particularly Suisho-buchi and the Sabō Dam)

Because the color shifts depending on season, weather, and sunlight, no two visits are exactly the same—an invitation to return again and again.

Must-See Spots Along the Niyodo River

Here are seven destinations you won’t want to miss.

Nagoya Chinka Bridge(submersible bridges)

Image courtesy of the Niyodo Blue Tourism Association(画像提供：一般社団法人仁淀ブルー観光協議会)

The longest of the six chinka bridges (submersible bridges) along the Niyodo, stretching 196 meters.

When the water is shallow, you can see fish swimming beneath in the shimmering blue—an image that has made the bridge especially popular on Instagram.

It is also the closest submersible bridge to Kochi City and is still used as a daily crossing by local residents.

(Chinka bridges are designed without railings; they function as regular bridges during low water but submerge beneath the surface when the river floods.)

Niko Falls (Niko-buchi)

Image courtesy of the Niyodo Blue Tourism Association(画像提供：一般社団法人仁淀ブルー観光協議会)

This waterfall basin in the upper reaches of the river is perhaps the most iconic view of Niyodo Blue.

Once considered sacred—the locals believed a great serpent god lived here—it was avoided for generations. That changed after photographer Nobuyuki Takahashi captured its beauty, spreading its fame across social media.

The most magical time to visit is around midday on a clear day, when sunlight pours directly into the basin, creating an otherworldly glow.

The first waterfall you’ll encounter when entering Yasui Gorge. Its name comes from the irresistible urge to look back one more time before leaving.

Day 1

Arrival in Kochi – A Journey Through Nature and Culture

At around 4:00 AM, before the break of dawn, I dragged my luggage onto the airport shuttle. After checking in my bags in the airport, I stopped by the duty-free lounge for a comforting bowl of shrimp wonton soup. The wontons were plump and juicy, and as I took my first bite, the warm broth exploded with flavor—a perfect way to kick off my Kochi adventure.

With great anticipation, I boarded my flight. Outside the window, the sky was a brilliant blue, quickly washing away any lingering fatigue from my early wake-up. Upon landing in Kochi, I immediately felt the warmth of this charming city.

The airport staff even handed out a local specialty—sweet potato cookies—as a welcome gift! Expecting the weather to be dry and chilly compared to Taiwan, I was pleasantly surprised by the mild and comfortable climate.

As we drove into the city, the road took us through multiple tunnels. My local guide explained that nearly 80% of Kochi Prefecture is covered by mountains, giving the region its lush, untouched beauty. The natural surroundings were so immersive that I couldn’t help but feel relaxed.

Niyodo Blue – Niyodo River and Nagoya Submersible Bridge

Our first stop was Nagoya Submersible Bridge, a unique bridge with no railings, stretching over the stunningly clear Niyodo River, known as “Japan’s last pristine stream.” The water was so transparent that I could easily see the pebbles and sand on the riverbed.

Walking across the bridge, I felt a slight thrill looking down at the calm, glass-like surface. It was a peaceful yet striking sight that made me pause and appreciate the beauty of nature.

Spiritual Exploration – Niiida Shrine and Wakamiya Hachimangu Shrine

Our next stop was Niiida Shrine, where I performed the hand-washing ritual at a beautifully carved dragon-shaped water spout. The flowing water and the soft rustling of bamboo in the breeze created a peaceful atmosphere. After ringing the shrine bell, I closed my eyes and wished for my family’s well-being.

A fun surprise here was the Bonito Fortune Fishing. Visitors use a small toy fishing rod to "catch" a fish, which holds a fortune slip inside. I got to take both home as a souvenir—a simple but memorable experience.

A 15-minute drive later, we arrived at Wakamiya Hachimangu Shrine, a quiet and sacred place.

Wooden ema plaques hung everywhere, each carrying prayers and wishes from past visitors. The atmosphere was calm and reflective, and I silently hoped that everyone’s wishes would come true.

Culinary Delight – Tosa Cuisine

Back in the city, it was time for dinner. Tosa cuisine is known for its incredibly fresh seafood, and this meal did not disappoint. My plate was filled with a variety of sashimi, including raw whitebait (shirasu), conger eel, and yellowtail. Each bite was packed with rich, natural flavors—fresh, slightly sweet, and full of umami. It was a great way to end the first day.

Sunday Market – A Local Treasure Trove

Early in the morning, I headed to the Sunday Market, one of the activities I had been looking forward to the most!

Kochi’s Sunday Market is one of Japan’s oldest open-air markets, held every Sunday in the city center. With over 300 stalls, it offers fresh local produce, seafood, handmade crafts, and street food such as grilled sweet potatoes and bonito dishes. It’s the perfect place to experience the local culture!

The market was clean and well-organized, with the entire street closed off for pedestrians, making it easy to explore at a leisurely pace. The first thing that caught my eye was a taco stall with a long line of customers. To my surprise, the owner spoke fluent English and enthusiastically introduced the different fillings and homemade sauces. I ordered two tacos, and the rich sauce blended perfectly with the minced meat—absolutely delicious!

The fresh fruits here were also impressive—grapes and tomatoes were incredibly sweet and juicy. But the biggest surprise was the sweet potato balls, which were completely different from the ones in Taiwan.

The crispy outer layer and soft, delicate inside created a perfect bite of happiness. I wrapped up my market visit with a refreshing cup of homemade yuzu ginger soda from an elderly vendor.

MASACASA TACO
・Specialty Taco (Pork Innards, Sweet Potato, Bell Pepper): 500 JPY (USD 3.5)
・Mexican Tortilla Soup: 400 JPY (USD 2.7)

Ohira Store (Sweet Potato Tempura)
・Sweet Potato Tempura: 400 JPY (USD 2.7)

A Quirky Aquarium in an Abandoned School

The next stop was the abandoned school-turned-aquarium, a place I had been eager to visit.

The building still retained its old blackboards and student desks, with children’s handwriting left on the walls—instantly transporting me back to childhood.

The most impressive features were the two giant cylindrical fish tanks. One was packed with hundreds of tiny fish swimming in sync, while the other housed a cheerful-looking stingray that occasionally popped up to spray water at visitors. It was adorable!

Lunch – Rice bowl&Ochazuke with Seared Kinmedai

For lunch, I stopped at a traditional Japanese restaurant and tried red bream Rice bowl&Ochazuke.

This was my first time eating seared kinmedai (golden eye snapper), and it was incredible. The slightly charred surface added a hint of smokiness, while the meat was firm, sweet, and completely free of any fishy taste. It was a dish I could eat over and over again.

Ryotei Kagetsu
・Mini Muroto Kinmedai Don: 1,200 JPY (USD 8.1)

A Hidden Gem – Ioki Cave

After lunch, I visited Ioki Cave, a local hidden gem. The entrance was dark and damp, making me feel a bit uneasy at first. But as I stepped through the cave, the scenery opened up into a magical landscape—lush bamboo groves, crystal-clear streams, and the soothing sounds of flowing water and chirping birds. The path led me over a small bridge and through some rocky sections where a rope was provided for support. Finally, I reached a small but picturesque waterfall, a view that felt straight out of a fairy tale.

NORA Clock & Sunset

In the evening, I visited NORA Clock, a charming wooden clock tower built by a local landowner. The area in front of the clock featured a sunflower field, which wasn’t in full bloom since it was winter, but I could still imagine how stunning it must look in summer.

Walking further along the road, I discovered a beautifully preserved historical bell tower. It was once the tallest structure in the area, serving as an early warning system for fires. Now, it stands as a reminder of the past, blending seamlessly into the peaceful surroundings.

Taking a short break by the roadside, I watched as the sunset painted the sky in hues of gold and crimson, casting a warm glow over the ocean. It was a serene and poetic moment.

Dinner at a Cozy Izakaya – Hirosueya

For dinner, I chose Hirosueya, a small but cozy Okonomiyaki izakaya. Their specialty was garlic chive salt yakisoba, which was packed with flavor yet not overly rich. Paired with a cold draft beer, it was the perfect way to end the day.

Hiromesuya

・Garlic Chive Salt Yakisoba (Large): 1,200 JPY (USD 8.1)
・Mixed Okonomiyaki (Pork, Shrimp, Squid): 1,200 JPY (USD 8.1)

Hello, I'm Kaito from Shizuoka, Japan. I recently had the chance to visit Kochi for the first time, and it was an amazing journey full of discoveries. Initially, my knowledge of Kochi was limited-I only knew about its famous Katsuo (bonito), Harimayabashi (a famous bridge), and Sakamoto Ryoma (a historical figure). But this trip, my first to Shikoku, surprised me pleasantly. I enjoyed the local cuisine and explored beautiful tourist spots; each experience was a revelation.

Kochi's unique vibe and nostalgic charm make it stand out from other places in Japan. I quickly grew fond of it. This article will talk about my last day in Kochi. I also visited the local market and Hirome Market, a famous place for trying Kochi's food and buying souvenirs. I can't wait to share these great experiences with you!

Final Day in Kochi: A Visit to the "Submersible Bridge

On the last day of my first trip to Kochi, I ventured out of the city, taking a car for a little excursion .

The bridges over the Shimanto River and Niyodo River are famous, but this time, I headed for the Submersible bridge over the Niyodo River. It's about an hour's drive from the city.

Surrounded by mountains, the area lets you truly immerse in nature. Such beautiful scenery!

Arriving at the "Submersible Bridge"

In Kochi, there are special bridges called "Submersible bridges." These bridges go under water when it rains a lot. This happens because there are no railings on the bridges, so when the river rises, the water can go over them without breaking them.

These bridges are made of wood or concrete and are found on smaller rivers. They are simple but very clever. are narrow and have no sides.

The Submersible bridges show how people in Kochi live with nature.

Crossing the bridge by car is terrifying due to the lack of railings, and the narrow width adds an extra thrill.

There's an unspoken local rule that the first car to enter the bridge has the right of way, and others must wait their turn.

Kure Taisho Machi Market

After the Niyodo River's submerged bridge, I headed to the Taisho Town Market in Kure, Nakatosa Town.

Delicious fish awaited me there!

At the market, I first watched cooking seared bonito fish. The fire was much stronger than I expected, and they seared the fish in just a few seconds.

Besides bonito, the market also sells other fish like tuna and swordfish, along with vegetables and fruits.

You can buy fish from the market's fishmonger and have it immediately prepared and served at the adjoining diner. and other dishes are also available, allowing you to enjoy fresh seafood right on the spot.

I tried tuna, swordfish, and bonito sashimi - all were incredibly delicious and beautiful.

Final Stop: Hirome Market

Finally, I went to Hirome Market in the city to grab lunch and buy souvenirs.

The market is always bustling and hosts many food stalls where you can buy whatever you like and eat on the spot. From bonito and other fish to ramen, gyoza, and Indian curry, there's plenty to choose from.

I had bonito for my last meal in Kochi - both as sashimi and lightly salted. The salted style, a recent trend, lets you taste the flavor of the bonito more directly compared to ponzu or soy sauce.

In Kochi, it's a faux pas to eat bonito with wasabi. Instead, you should have it with sliced garlic - that's the local way.

Heading Back to Tokyo or Osaka

After enjoying Hirome Market, I took the airport shuttle bus from Harimayabashi bus stop to Kochi Ryoma Airport.

It's good to arrive about an hour and a half before departure for a relaxed experience.

There was a huge naruko (Japanese clapper) at the airport, and a viewing deck where you can watch airplanes if you have time.

The flight back was also about an hour and a half, landing at Haneda Airport before 5 PM, so I got back to Tokyo while it was still light out!

Summary of My First Trip to Kochi

Kochi Prefecture, my first-time visit, was an incredibly charming place.

What stood out the most was how friendly the people were. the staff at diners and shops were always eager to chat, giving a real sense of family and warmth.

Kochi is definitely the place to go for delicious fish in Japan. Not just for bonito, but for a wide variety of tasty seafood.

It's a quick flight from major urban areas like Tokyo and Osaka. For those wanting to experience the authentic local culture and nature of Japan, Kochi is a great destination to consider.
